How to Do It
Dental care in Mexico can be a great option—especially for larger treatment such as crowns, bridges and implants. Many patients are able to complete treatment they otherwise could not afford and save thousands of dollars.
The key is to do your homework before you go.
1. Where Do We Recommend?
We generally recommend considering Los Algodones or Cancún. Both are major dental destinations with many practices accustomed to caring for American and Canadian patients.
Los Algodones — “Molar City”
Los Algodones is possibly the largest concentration of dentists in the world, with 500+ dentists in a small, walkable area serving nearly 2 million American dental patients every year. The large number of clinics means patients can research and compare dentists, specialists, treatment options and prices.
It is also surprisingly easy to reach:
Fly into Yuma, Arizona — about a 30-minute drive to the border
Fly into Phoenix, Arizona — about a 3-hour drive
Fly into San Diego, California — about a 3-hour drive
Drive from the Los Angeles area — approximately 5 hours
Drive from Northern California (Bay Area/San Joaquin Valley) — approximately 10 hours
Many patients park on the U.S. side of the border and simply walk across into Los Algodones, where hundreds of dental offices are concentrated within a compact area.
Cancún — Dentistry + Destination
Cancún is a major dental hub in its own right, with many modern practices that specialize in international patients.
It is a particularly attractive choice if you prefer to fly directly to your destination and combine dental care with a vacation.
Both can be excellent choices.
The important part is choosing the right dentist—not simply the lowest price.
2. Do Your Research
Don’t choose a dental office based on price alone. Look at several sources:
Google Reviews — Look for a large number of recent, detailed reviews.
Yelp — Read both the good and bad reviews.
YouTube — Search the dentist or clinic name. Patient videos can give you a feel for the office and experience.
Facebook Groups — Groups such as Dental Tourism Mexico can be helpful for hearing from real patients.
Reddit — Search the clinic and dentist's name. Look for detailed patient experiences—not just recommendations.
Personal Referral — BEST OF ALL — If someone you know and trust has had successful treatment there, ask about their experience.
Look for patterns.
One great review—or one terrible review—doesn’t tell the whole story. Look at what patients consistently say about the dentist, quality of care, communication and follow-up.
3. Know WHO Is Treating You
Contact 2 to 3 dental offices. A beautiful website or large clinic is not enough.
Ask:
What is the dentist's name?
How long have they been practicing?
Do they regularly perform the treatment you need?
If you need implants, who actually places the implants?
Can you research that dentist independently?
You are choosing a dentist, not just a dental office.
4. Get a Treatment Plan BEFORE You Go
Whenever possible, get:
Your diagnosis
Which teeth are being treated
Recommended treatment
Estimated total cost
Number of appointments
How many days you should plan to stay
Bring the treatment plan to us if you would like help understanding it.
5. Ask About Materials
For crowns, ask what type of crown is being used.
For implants, ask for the:
Implant brand
Implant size and location
Type of implant components being used
Keep your implant information!
If you ever need an implant repaired years from now, knowing the implant system can be extremely helpful.
6. Don't Rush
Major dentistry takes time. Try not to schedule your final dental appointment just a few hours before your flight home.
Give yourself some extra time in case:
Your bite needs adjusting
A temporary comes loose
You have unexpected discomfort
The dentist wants to see you one more time
6. Bring Your Records Home
Before leaving Mexico, ask for copies of:
X-rays
3-D/CBCT scans, if taken
Treatment records
Implant information
A list of the teeth treated
Save them.
