What 3 Questions Should I Ask My Dental Insurance Company Before Getting Dental Implants Abroad?
/Dental implants can cost thousands of dollars in the United States. That's why many Americans travel to Mexico, Turkey, and other countries seeking more affordable treatment.
“Before buying a plane ticket, make one important phone call—to your dental insurance company,” advises Mas’ood Cajee, DDS, MPH, a Manteca dentist.
Here are three questions worth asking.
1. Does my dental insurance cover implants?
Ask whether your plan covers the implant surgery, abutment (connector), and crown. These may be billed separately. Find out what percentage is covered, your deductible, and your annual benefit limit.
2. Will my insurance reimburse me for implants done abroad?
Even if your plan covers implants in America, that doesn't mean it covers elective treatment overseas. Ask specifically about Mexico, Turkey, or your destination.
Request written confirmation of any restrictions and whether preapproval is needed.
3. How do I get reimbursed?
Ask whether you must submit an ADA dental claim form or a special international claim form. Before leaving the foreign dental clinic, collect a detailed receipt showing:
Amount paid, in the original currency
Procedures performed, including teeth treated
Dentist's name and address
Dates of service
An English translation may speed up processing. Ask for procedure codes, too, if available.
The Bottom Line
Don't leave your paperwork behind! Keep copies of everything, and remember that insurance reimbursement is never guaranteed.
DID YOU KNOW…?
An implant, abutment, and crown are three different components—and your insurer may pay for them differently!

One important distinction: Some plans limit overseas benefits to dental emergencies. Planned implant treatment may be excluded, even if emergency dental care abroad is covered.
