I Stopped Wearing My Retainers. Now My Teeth Have Moved! Can I Straighten Them Again?

You spent months wearing braces, finally got the smile you wanted, and promised yourself you'd wear your retainer forever. Then you stopped. Sound familiar?

“It's common for teeth to shift after orthodontic treatment. Fortunately, some patients only need a little touch-up, not another full course of braces,” says Manteca dentist Max Calder, DDS, MPH.

Orthodontic relapse happens when teeth move after treatment. If your front teeth have become slightly crowded or crooked again, here are five things to know.

1. You may not need full braces again. Minor crowding or a few rotated teeth can sometimes be corrected with limited orthodontic treatment.

2. Clear aligners are an option. These nearly invisible, removable trays gradually guide shifted teeth back toward better alignment.

3. Consider “Social Six” braces. If only your front teeth need attention, short-term braces may be an option. Some patients can even choose clear brackets for a less noticeable look.

4. Treatment may take just a few months. Selected cases can be completed in approximately three to six months, although more complicated problems may take longer.

5. A smaller treatment can mean a smaller bill. Limited orthodontics may cost less than comprehensive treatment. Ask about insurance benefits, a down payment, and manageable monthly payments.

One last thing: Don't forget your retainers this time! Teeth can continue moving throughout life. Your new retainers will help protect your second chance at a straighter smile.

At Dr. Cajee's Manteca dental practice, we offer limited orthodontic treatment through our exclusive in-house brand, CONF!DENCE Aligners & Braces. An examination can help determine whether a simple touch-up is right for you.

DID YOU KNOW…?

  • A retainer that no longer fits shouldn't be forced onto your teeth. If it won't seat comfortably, have it checked.

  • Even after successful braces, teeth can keep shifting throughout adulthood. Long-term retainer wear is the best protection against relapse.
